Scam Alert
Please be advised that scammers have been sending out e-mails and texts saying that they are Fr. Epperson or Fr. Sanchez.
The scammer begins by telling you that he has a favor to ask you and for you to please respond. When you respond, the scammer tells you that he needs gift cards for people who are in the hospital. Our priests, and priests of the diocese, would never solicit money in this manner.
If you see a text or e-mail like this, please do not even respond. Just delete it.

October is Respect Life Month
Since 1973, the year the Supreme Court legalized abortion nationwide in Roe v. Wade, the month of October has been set aside by the U.S. bishops as a time to focus on protecting God’s precious gift of human life. While we thank God that the terrible reign of Roe has ended, we also recognize that abortion still continues in most states and is aggressively promoted at the federal level. A great many prayers, sacrifices, and good works are still desperately needed to transform a culture of death into a culture of life. Our public witness, our marching, and our advocacy must continue…
You will find prayer cards in the vestibules of the church. Please take one home with you and pray for a change of heart and mind for those who think of abortion as a viable choice.
Singles Potluck
We have our Singles Potluck on the first Saturday of each month, so that means that our meeting will be on October 7th this month! We open the doors of the Parish Life Center at 5:30 p.m. and begin our Potluck with prayer at 6:00 p.m.
Please join us as we share good food, pray together, and mingle!
Call Deborah to RSVP or for more info at: 310-600-2359.
Blue Mass
Next Sunday, October 8, Bishop Vasa will celebrate a “Blue” Mass at 10:30 a.m. A Blue Mass is a Mass celebrated annually in the church for those employed in the field of public safety, which includes police officers, firefighters, corrections officers, and paramedics.
In the United States, the Blue Mass tradition began in September 1934, when Father Thomas Dade of the Archdiocese of Baltimore formed the Catholic Police and Fireman’s Society. That year, the first Blue Mass was celebrated for police officers and firefighters. The name comes from the traditional uniform color associated with law enforcement.
If you or a family member is in the field of Public Safety, please mark this date on your calendar and join us at the Cathedral for Holy Mass!

Anointing of the Sick
A word to the wise: if you or a loved one is sick, especially with an illness that could lead to death, don’t put off calling a priest! Being anointed while still conscious and able to respond offers many graces. Often people hesitate to call a priest to the bedside of a loved one for fear of making their loved one nervous or scared.
Remember, one’s immortal soul could be at stake! Seize the time!

Hold conversations in safe areas rather than in the parking lot.
Lock your vehicle and keep valuables out of plain sight.

Ember Days
Ember days are a tradition that was established in the early Church. They consist of a Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday set aside for prayer and fasting at the beginning of every season. The intention of these days is “to thank God for the gifts of nature, to teach men to make use of them in moderation, and to assist the needy,” (Catholic Encyclopedia) and each set is associated with a particular harvest. The Ember Days fall on: the Third Week of Advent; the First Week of Lent; the week after Pentecost and the Third Week in September (that’s this week: the 20th, 22nd, and 23rd). Traditionally, Ember Wednesdays and Saturdays are observed with abstinence while Ember Fridays are observed with fasting and abstinence. Mandatory observance for these days stopped in 1966 but the traditional practices are still observed by many who wish to “go the extra mile” and give thanks to the Lord for all He has given us!
