St. Edward the Confessor, Pray for Us.
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Today is the Feast of St. Edward the Confessor. Saint Edward, son of King Ethelred, was unexpectedly raised to the throne of England in 1041, at the age of forty years. God had shown Edward to a pious bishop in a vision, as England’s King, anointed by Saint Peter: “Behold the one who will be King through My favor; he will be cherished by heaven, agreeable to men, terrible to his enemies, loving to his subjects, very useful to the Church of God.” Along with this quote from the Lord Himself, I would like to share with you some more quotes that I think are particularly apropos for our times. The first quote is taken from the Holy Bible, where we are warned that a time will come when error will be sown, even by our own leaders, and confusion will abound. Those who don’t know their faith and who are not vigilant will fall away from God and not even realize it. (The emphasis below is mine.)
On Staying the Course of Sound Doctrine
2 Timothy 4: 1-5: “In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I solemnly urge you: proclaim the message; be persistent whether the time is favorable or unfavorable; convince, rebuke, and encourage, with the utmost patience in teaching. For the time is coming when people will not put up with sound doctrine, but having itching ears, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own desires, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander away to myths. As for you, always be sober, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, carry out your ministry fully.”
ON FATIMA Sr. Lucia of Fatima: “From now on, we are either with God or we are with the Devil; there is no middle ground.” The Blessed Mother: “People must amend their lives and ask pardon for their sins. They must not offend our Lord any more, for He is already too much offended.”
ON BEING A BELIEVER IN THE SECULAR WORLD The Venerable Fulton Sheen: “A religion that doesn’t interfere with the secular order will soon discover that the secular order will not refrain from interfering with it.”
Fr. Garrigou Lagrange, O.P.: “The Church is intolerant in principle because she believes; she is tolerant in practice because she loves. The enemies of the Church are tolerant in principle because they do not believe; they are intolerant in practice because they do not love.”
St. Philippine Duchesne: “You may dazzle the mind with a thousand brilliant discoveries of natural science; you may open new worlds of knowledge which were never dreamed of before; yet, if you have not developed in the soul of the pupil strong habits of virtue which will sustain her in the struggle of life, you have not educated her, but only put in her hand a powerful instrument of self-destruction.”
—Fr. Epperson
Quote of the Day
“It is better to vote for a good Protestant than for a bad Catholic.”
-Cardinal Gerhard Muller
