Ordination to the Sacred Order of the Priesthood
“The priest is not a priest for himself; he does not give himself absolution; he does not administer the Sacraments to himself. He is not for himself, he is for you.” — St. John Vianney, The Curé of Ars
On Saturday, June 1, 2024, His Excellency, Bishop Robert Vasa, will ordain Rev. Mr. Mauricio Rodriguez and Rev. Mr. Christopher Girolo to the Holy Priesthood here at the Cathedral of St. Eugene. The ordination will be followed by a reception in the Msgr. Becker Center. All are welcome.
Ordination, June 1, morning schedule changes
On June 1 we will not have our First Saturday Devotions after the 8 a.m. Mass. We will have them before the Mass. We will be having the ordination of Deacons Girolo and Rodriguez on June 1 at 10 a.m. All are invited. Please note that we will have to begin setting up and preparing for the ordination at 8:30 a.m. The regularly scheduled confessions will still be offered; however, the pastor (Fr. Brown) will not be able to stay as long as he normally does because of the ordination preparations. Thank you for your understanding.
Summer Break for MSSR Choir
The Marian Sisters of Santa Rosa choir will take a summer break. Their last 1:30 p.m. Sunday Missa Cantata will be May 26. Sung Masses to resume at the end of August.
Memorial Day Mass
On Monday, May 27th, our country celebrates Memorial Day. A Mass will be celebrated at the chapel at Calvary Catholic Cemetery, 2930 Bennett Valley Road, Santa Rosa, at 10:00 a.m. on this day.
Corpus Christi Procession
On Sunday, June 2nd, you are invited to join in a procession with The Blessed Sacrament following the 10:30 a.m. Mass as we celebrate the Feast of Corpus Christi. (The faithful who piously participate in a solemn Eucharistic procession, either inside or outside of a Church, especially on the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ, may receive a plenary indulgence.)
What is a plenary indulgence? Even though confessed and forgiven sins will not send a person to hell, consequences remain to be paid on earth or in purgatory. An indulgence frees the recipient from those consequences. Reception of an indulgence always springs from sincere repentance, the desire to live a holy life, reception of the sacraments of Penance and Holy Communion as soon as possible and prayer for the Holy Father. A partial indulgence covers part of the punishment due for sins; a plenary indulgence removes all of it.
The Feast of St. Eugene
This year our parish Feast Day falls on a Sunday and that Sunday is Corpus Christi. Alas, we will not be celebrating the Mass of St. Eugene. However, you can still get the plenary indulgence by devoutly visiting the Church on June 2. In order to receive the indulgence, you need to be free from sin and recite the Lord's Prayer, the Creed, and pray for the Pope's Intentions. The Papal Prayer Intention for June is for migrants fleeing their homes. You must also go to Confession and receive Holy Communion within several days before or after June 2 in order to obtain the plenary indulgence. Pope St. Eugene died in 657 and was buried in the crypt of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome.

Jubilee Year 2025
The year 2025 will be a special year in the Catholic Church. Every 25 years we have a jubilee year with special indulgences, prayers, and graces. Its roots are ultimately in the Old Testament Torah and it developed as a specifically Catholic practice in the later Middle Ages. Also, it is the 75th anniversary of the founding of our parish. We will be celebrating a very special year indeed. To that end, we would like to create a Jubilee Committee to help plan and execute Jubilee events which will be liturgical and social. If you are interested, please email Fr. Brown at mbrown@srdiocese.org
